Deltacommittee on coastal development

Established in September 2007, the Delta Committee studies the long-term protection of the Dutch coast and hinterland. The remit of the Delta Committee is to increase the understanding for the coming century of the expected rise in sea levels and other climatological and social changes that affect the Dutch coast. In addition, the Committee will advise on the development of a coherent policy geared towards the sustainable development of the Dutch coastal area.

The study takes into account the entire Dutch coast: from Zeeland up to and including the Wadden Islands. Where necessary, the study will extend to the coastal areas of other countries along the North Sea. The study also covers the river basin region, as rising sea levels influence the ability to handle potentially higher river discharge volumes.
The members of the Delta Committee were selected from various disciplines, such as climate, spatial planning, construction and management.  The Delta Committee will present its report to the State Secretary for Transport, Public Works and Water Management in 2008. The government will use the Committee’s report in drafting the Kustvisie (Coastal Vision) to be included in the first National Water Plan (2009).
