Strengthening Weak Links
To ascertain whether the seawalls meet the requirements set for coastal protection, an extra test was conducted in 2003. This was necessary because it turned out that the strength with which the waves strike the coast is greater than had previously been assumed. The test revealed that the dunes or dykes at ten locations along the Dutch coast will have to be reinforced by 2020 in order to continue to meet the safety standards.
At several of the ten locations, temporary emergency measures were implemented in 2003 and 2004 as they did not meet safety standards at the time. A structural solution has to be found for all ten of these 'weak links' before 2020.
