Structural Reform Planning
From January the 1th 2007 the new structure of the Danish planning system will be in place. It means that the present 13 counties will cease to exist and the 271 municipalities will be reduced to 98. The 98 municipalities will take over most of the responsibilities from the counties in the areas of environment protection, nature conservation and spatial planning.
The 78 municipalities with coastal areas will be responsible for planning and managing both the coastal cities and the coastal areas outside the cities. The responsibilities of the counties mentioned above will pass to the municipalities. From 2007 to 2009 the regional plans have the status of national regulations. In 2009 the first generation of municipal planning strategies in the new structure must be operational.
